However, the current recycling rate of 17% is far from ideal, and experts fear that the cost of recycling may exceed the funds generated by an installation fee. The Australian Academy of Technological Sciences & Engineering (ATSE) has proposed a national recycling scheme funded by a $10 to $20 per-panel installation fee, but the federal government's commitment to this scheme is uncertain. The challenge lies in ensuring that the solution is economically viable and environmentally sound, especially in remote areas where transport costs can be significant. A circular economy approach, where solar panels are considered part of a reusable system, could be the key to addressing this issue. This involves a shift in perspective from disposable products to a more sustainable model, where the cost and responsibility are shared by manufacturers, importers, and customers. The success of such a scheme depends on effective regulation and a willingness to think creatively about the potential reuse of solar panels, rather than treating them as waste.
