The tragic story of William Shatner's marriage to Nerine Kidd is a cautionary tale about the dangers of addiction and the devastating impact it can have on relationships. The actor, best known for his role as Captain Kirk in Star Trek, found himself in a situation that few could have imagined. He was deeply in love with a woman who was battling a severe addiction, and his attempts to save her only led to his own personal tragedy.
Their romance began in 1994 when Shatner was directing a TV project in Toronto. Despite a 28-year age gap, the chemistry between the star and model was instant. Shatner later described the attraction as a 'thunderbolt', captivated by her energy, beauty, and sharp wit. They tied the knot in a star-studded ceremony in Pasadena, California, in November 1997, with Star Trek alum Leonard Nimoy, who played Mr. Spock, standing by Shatner's side as his best man. Shatner had spent the day visiting his daughters in Orange County but when he returned to the quiet Studio City home he shared with Kidd, she was nowhere to be found. Shatner walked out to the backyard where they had a pool and found Kidd's body lying motionless at the bottom of the deep end.
Shatner, then 68, took the huge risk to dive into the water, fully clothed, to pull his 40-year-old wife to the surface. He attempted to administer CPR while frantically dialing 911, but it was already too late. Kidd was pronounced dead at the scene. The Los Angeles Police Department launched an investigation into the incident. The autopsy and toxicology revealed Kidd's blood-alcohol level was more than three times the legal driving limit. The coroner concluded that Kidd had likely been diving or swimming under the heavy influence of alcohol, misjudged the water, and struck her head on the bottom or side of the pool. She suffered a neck injury and lost consciousness, leading to an accidental drowning.
The loss of Kidd shattered Shatner. The morning after her death, he told reporters at his home: 'My beautiful wife is dead. She meant everything to me'. Shatner has since channeled his grief into healing and founded the Nerine Shatner Memorial Fund, which helps fund Friendly House, a Los Angeles-based non-profit recovery home that assists women rebuilding their lives after battling substance dependency. He went on to eventually find love again, but the loss of Kidd remains an emotionally difficult period in his life.
